A military deployment is a hard thing for any family to go through. The separation from the ones you love and the events you miss, might make it the hardest.
Commander Bill Anderson was sent to Afghanistan last August and he knew he would miss a milestone in his son Brian's life. But commander Anderson did what he could to make an appearance.
Looking around the fathers blessing at Colorado Springs Christian School, you see student after student with their dad. Everyone, but Brian.
"He's fighting in the war, but not really, he's trying tell the Afghani's to stop trying to kill people," Brian tells 11 News.
Brian's dad, Commander Bill Anderson is fighting in Afghanistan, and he knew when he left, he'd be missing out on a lot over the year.
"He's going to go from 9 to 10 and that's a huge gap. That's what I'm going to miss the most," he says.
"It was very difficult, because I'm not going to be here for an important event in his life."
But the commander didn't want to be absent from the day altogether, even though he was thousands of miles away, so he taped this blessing to his son before he left. So that he could still be there, somehow.
But even though Brian got to watch his dad read his blessing, Commander Anderson missed seeing the tears in his son's eyes, on that very special day.
Brian's dad will be coming home after his tour this August.
