A coroner says a man who died after a boating accident at Clear Creek Reservoir was from Leadville.

Chaffee County Coroner Randy Amettis tells The Pueblo Chieftain 41-year-old David Lucero died Thursday.

Witnesses told sheriff's officials Lucero was on a small aluminum boat with two girls, ages 6 and 8, who were wearing life preservers, but Lucero was not wearing one. They say Lucero was doing small figure eights at a slow speed about 400 feet from shore when the boat began to take on water.

Lucero, family and friends helped get the girls safely to shore, but Lucero had trouble getting out of the water.

Emergency responders say they arrived to find several people administering CPR to Lucero on shore. He died at the scene.

So sad, I hope those poor girls can overcome such a tragic loss. My daughter always makes me wear my life preserver because I make her wear hers. People don't realize what cold water temperatures really do to you mentally and physically until it happens to you. I'm very glad to hear the girls are safe.
