A funeral Mass has been held for a northwestern Indiana soldier killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.
Thirty-two-year-old Army Staff Sgt. David Nowaczyk of Dyer was killed April 15 on his third tour of duty. The Times of Munster reports the hymns "America the Beautiful" rang out from St. Thomas More Church in Munster on Wednesday as his body of was lifted into a hearse at the end of the Mass.
The Rev. Michael Yadron said Nowaczyk upheld the principle of loving your neighbor and sacrificing your life for others.
Nowaczyk was an infantryman based at Fort Carson in Colorado. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. His medals included two Bronze Stars.
