A fatal head-on accident at the intersection of S. Circle and East Fountain Blvd. claimed the life of one woman and the drivers of both cars are now being charged with DUI.

Colorado Springs police say the head-on collision happened around 2:15 a.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they found that a Ford truck, driven by 30-year-old James E Vaughan, had been traveling south on Circle and attempted to make a left turn on to Fountain.

The second vehicle, a Mercury Cougar driven by 23-year-old Ruperto Olivas-Larre, was heading north on Circle without headlights. Both vehicles hit head-on spinning them in the intersection.

Cynthia Casas, 19, of Colorado Springs was the passenger in the front seat of Olivas-Larre's car. She died on scene.

Vaughan was injured and transported to Memorial Hospital and later arrested for Vehicular Homicide, DUI, and various other traffic charges. Police say Vaughan is a member of the Army and is stationed at Fort Carson. He's being held at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

Olivas-Larre was also arrested for Vehicular Homicide, DUI, and various other traffic charges. He's being held at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on an ICE Hold.

There were a total of 7 people in the two vehicles, all of them were injured and one, Casas, was killed.

I was helping a friend one night who was drunk off his behind and granted I shouldn't have driven because I had drinken (for the first time in months) several hours earlier that day I didn't want my friend to drive...and she would have!!! I got her to our destination and was pulled over for speeding, but since my pass had a beer in hand when the trooper came to my car I was in trouble and knew it...I got the DUI even though I barely blew over the legal limit! At some point everyone will drink and drive...its whether or not you have and accident or get caught that makes the difference! You never know whats going to happen and if you are lucky and get home without killing or hurting someone or getting pulled over then congrats! you might have gotten your last free pass...who knows you might get one next time. Case in point-Your mowing the lawn and have a beer, when your kid calls and is needing a ride home...are you going to tell them to walk home or are you going to get them? CHOICES!!

To Michael, tragically you are correct. As the weather gets warmer, more people will be drinking and driving. I agree that the judicial system needs to be harsher when it comes to this as well as texting/talking on the phone. Too many innocent people are losing their lives to stupid mistakes by people that not only cause the accident but usually walk away from it scratch free. 3 accidents in one weekend and all are suspected to be or have been determined to be DUI's. People...stop and think about the repercussions of your actions when you get behind the wheel while drunk. You not only endanger your life but the lives of innocent people using the same roads as you. Is it really worth it? Just pick up the phone and call someone. To Dominic - you're an idiot. I will keep you in my prayers that this never happens to you or anyone you know.
