University of Colorado officials say professor Ward Churchill's essay comparing some September 11th victims to a Nazi is protected by the Constitution.
But they say plagiarism allegations and claims that Churchill misrepresented himself as an American Indian will be investigated further.
Those were the results of a review by university administrators of Churchill's works following controversy over his essay.
A faculty committee now will take about nine months to examine the plagiarism and misrepresentation claims against Churchill -- who is a tenured professor of ethnic studies. The committee could recommend that Churchill be fired.
Churchill has denied the allegations and has said he would sue if he is fired.
