Wrong-Way Crash Causes Fuel Spill On Roadway

By  |

The driver of a Jeep only sustained minor injuries after crashing head-on into an oncoming semi-truck, but police say he caused a mess on the roadway.

The accident on East Fillmore late Tuesday night caused more than 30 gallons of fuel to leak out of the semi's gas tank after the Jeep hit it. The Colorado Springs Fire Department was able to contain the leak, but the road was shut down at Pennsylvania Avenue for more than five hours. The road reopened at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say the 23-year-old driver of the Jeep was under the influence of drugs while on the road. The accident happened after he allegedly crossed over from the eastbound lanes onto the westbound side of the road and hit the semi.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Matt Kershaw, the driver of the Jeep, was cited with driving under the influence of drugs, as well as other traffic charges.
