Woman Finds Armed Man Inside Her Home

A Colorado Springs woman returned home on Friday to find an armed man in her house.

It happened around 10:40 a.m. on Buckeye Drive near Rockrimmon and Woodmen.

"I sat in my chair over there and all of a sudden, somebody was in the house and he came up to me," said Jane McCann.

The stranger had a gun and a question. He wanted to know if anyone else was home.

McCann had to think fast and police say what she did next was critical.

"I kept saying [my husband] should be coming pretty soon and I know I said it twice for sure that he was coming. So [the burglar] was really rattled about that," said McCann.

"Staying in this house was not in this person's best interest, they fled and this gave the victim the opportunity to escape so it was definitely the right thing in this case," said Sgt. Darrin Abbink with the Colorado Springs Police.

McCann couldn't get a good look at the suspect, she said he was wearing a shirt and pants over his face as a mask.

She said he was a thin white man around 5'7".

McCann said nothing was stolen other than the shirt and pants out her and her husband's closet. She said she's grateful that was the extent of the damage done.

"It was terrible, it's just unreal, you don't expect something like that and there he is standing there," said McCann.

Police tell 11 News that they cannot confirm if this incident is related to the other recent string of burglaries around the city, but they are not ruling out the possibility.
