She was in an elevator at her apartment complex, a complex specifically for adults over the age of 55.
A safe place.
But in the blink of an eye, this senior citizen found herself fighting for her life when a fellow resident attacked her.
The victim, who wishes to remain nameless, said the attack was completely out of the blue. One minute, she was standing in the elevator at the Regency Tower Apartments in southwest Colorado Springs, waiting to get to her floor. The next--a man had his hands around her neck. She recalled those terrifying seconds to 11 News.
"He attacked me in the elevator. He grabbed me by my throat. He threw me down on the floor and was trying to choke me to death."
At one point the victim, who is in her 70s, said she started to lose consciousness, but she knew she had to fight back. As her attacker held her down on the floor, the victim said she started to kick him. But he was too strong.
"That man's hands were like a bison holding me down on the floor," she said.
Two people realized what was happening and came to her rescue.
"Two men grabbed him from the open elevator door and pulled him out," the victim said.
Police were called to the scene and arrested the man. At this time, officers are calling the attack unprovoked, and tell 11 News they are trying to sort out details about the suspect such as his mental stability.
The suspect is being charged with assault on an at-risk adult.
