Authorities have downgraded the size of a wildfire that burned in the Ellicott area Wednesday night.
Initial reports had the fire has large as 80-100 acres, but the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said Friday that the fire was significantly smaller. It measured at 38 acres after a fire investigator plotted the burn area using GPS.
It's common for reported fire sizes to change following an investigation, as often firefighters are estimating by sight while battling the fire. An exact GPS measurement will then come later, once the fire is under control.
The fire started around 8:30 Wednesday night. More than seven agencies raced to the area of Milne and Drennan, and had the fire fully contained within two hours.
There's no word on what caused the fire, but our meteorologists had warned Wednesday would have high fire danger due to the combination of warm, dry weather and windy conditions. The Ellicott fire was one of several fires to start that day.
