A 6-month old is safe after being held hostage for several hours.
Weld County SWAT team surrounded a home for several hours after a man barricaded himself inside a La Salle home and held the baby girl inside.
Deputies later found 44-year-old Gabriel Esparza hiding behind a liquor store in La Salle. He faces charges of second-degree assault and violating a restraining order.
Martinez.says the standoff began around 1:30 a.m. when deputies tried to investigate a domestic dispute with the child's mother. The suspect threatened to kill the woman after she was assaulted, according to Martinez. The woman managed to get out safely, but her child still remains inside the home.
Deputies said they do not know if the man is armed.
"Right now we have not been able to make contact with the man," said Martinez. "We are waiting for search warrants or arrest warrants."
Seven homes in the neighborhood have been evacuated as a precaution.
