Traffic on Garden of the Gods was backed up for several blocks east of the interstate Tuesday as crews repaired a dangerous gas leak.
Colorado Springs Utilities finished the repairs just before 11 p.m. Tuesday, but say they will have to shut down some eastbound lanes again on Wednesday for repaving. The lane closures will begin at 9 a.m.
A construction crew hit a gas line just before 2:30 in the afternoon on Tuesday, forcing Garden of the Gods to shut down between I-25 and Centennial.
Colorado Springs Fire Department Battalion Chief Troy Branham says it was imperative to shut down traffic in both directions because of how dangerously high the gas levels were in the area.
"It's extremely dangerous... 7 to 20 percent being in the explosive range. With that gas going across Garden of the Gods, we were in the upper 20 percent, so every vehicle going by is potential ignition source for that gas leak," Branham said.
Westbound lanes re-opened around 5:30 p.m., with eastbound lanes following several hours later.
We're told emergency crews had to dig through several inches of asphalt to find the valve and stop the leak.
