Voters Will Be Asked To Extend PPRTA Tax In November

When voters in the Pikes Peak region go to the polls in November, they’ll be asked to approve a ten year extension of a one-cent sales tax that funds transportation improvements.

If voters don’t approve the extension of the full Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority tax, the rate will drop to 45 percent. That will continue to fund maintenance and transit programs, but not capital projects.

"We consider infrastructure something that constantly deteriorates and we haven't done a great job in the Pikes Peak Region of taking care of what we have here. This is really an effort to get after some critical projects," said Dan Stuart, co-chair of the coalition to extend the PPRTA.

Voters in El Paso County, Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, Green Mountain Falls, Calhan and Ramah will all be asked to vote on extending the tax.

The PPRTA reports it has completed 32 projects since being formed in 2004. That includes the Cimarron Street Bridge, the Austin Bluffs Parkway and Union Boulevard Interchange, the widening of Marksheffel Road and more.

Future plans include bridge and pavement reconstructions, extending roads, road improvements and bike lane improvements.
