Victim and Witnesses Talk Following Shooting at Planned Parenthood

Here's the latest information we have on the 11 Breaking News Alert of the shooting at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs.

According to our partners at the Gazette, the suspect has been identified as Robert Lewis Dear. Police say he walked into a Planned Parenthood off Fillmore and Centennial just before noon Friday.

Twelve people were shot. Three people have died, including a UCCS Police Officer. Forty-four year-old Garrett Swasey rushed to the scene to help fellow officers. He was killed in the line of duty.

Nine people are in the hospital, including five officers and four civilians. We're told they're all in good condition.

We do not know the alleged gunman's motive yet and our newsroom is working to learn more about it.

As of Friday night, the intersection of Fillmore and Centennial was still closed. Police told us they would be on scene throughout the night.

Planned Parenthood is about a quarter mile north of that intersection, down Centennial.

One victim was sitting in his car, outside the Planned Parenthood when he saw the gunman.

"I saw myself in the mirror and was like, 'my god, he was aiming for my head," said Ozy Licano. "It's just wierd to stare into the face of someone like that, and he didn't win."

Police tell us the call came in at 11:38 a.m. Friday. The suspect was arrested more than five hours later at 4:52 p.m. Police tell us officers were able to shout at the suspect to get him to surrender.

Planned Parenthood is just down the road from a strip mall that includes a King Soopers. The entire area was put on lockdown Friday afternoon.

We know that 150 people were inside the King Soopers. Dozens more were at all of the other businesses. There's banks, restaurants, and other shops.

All of those people were then bused to a nearby VA hospital and to American Furniture Warehouse to meet up with their family members.

We talked to one couple who said they walked outside of Chase Bank and heard gun shots, so they went back inside the bank. Then they stayed there during the lockdown.

"Just blessed we're alive," said Beatrice Carrillo. "We were with all the policemen, they were shooting from the rooftop where our policemen were."

The shopping center was taped off Friday night. All of the customers had to leave their cars there because they are part of the crime scene.

We know that the FBI alerted local law enforcement a few months ago that people would target Planned Parenthoods across the country.

The warning came as Congress was debating Planned Parenthood funding and on the heels of a series of videos reportedly showing doctors talking about the harvesting of fetal tissue from abortions.

We'll pass along more information as it becomes available.
