Vandal Damages Memorial for Fallen Tow Truck Operator

Updated: Thu 5:42 AM, Jan 03, 2013

An upsetting vandalism was caught in-progress near the scene of a crime that shocked southern Colorado.

Vandals targeted a roadside memorial for Allen Rose Wednesday night, reportedly in front of his widow.

Police say Rose's widow saw a man snapping a cross at the memorial site on Platte in Colorado Springs, and called police.

Additionally, 11 News was told that a commemorative stone placed at the memorial site by Rose's family is missing, though police are not sure if that has anything to do with Wednesday's vandalism.

The memorial sits on the roadside where Rose was dragged for more than a mile after becoming tangled in towing ropes when he tried to tow Detra Farries' SUV in February 2011. He was then dragged for more than a mile before he came free of those towing ropes on Platte.

Rose later died, and Farries was convicted of his death last year.

Since the day of that crime, the memorial has been a gathering place for friends and family, as well as others in the community who remember clearly what happened and have wished to pay their respects.

The damage done is a misdemeanor offense. 11 News asked for the man's name, but police did not provide that information.
