August's tepid jobs report had more bad news Friday.

Twenty-six states saw unemployment increase last month, the Labor Department announced Friday.

Unemployment fell in 12 states and remained unchanged in the other 12. Among these, preliminary numbers indicate that Colorado was among the 12 where unemployment fell, albeit slightly. Based on preliminary data, Colorado's unemployment rate was 8.2 percent in August, down from 8.3 percent in July.

The national unemployment rate for August was 8.1 percent, though in part due to a large number of what is known as marginally attached workers, which are workers not counted in the unemployment numbers because they have not searched for work in four weeks at the time of the survey. This blanket category includes everything from discouraged workers to people not job hunting due to school or family obligations.
