Continuing to track rain/snow showers throughout southeast Colorado this morning as wet, gloomy and cool conditions continue. If you are hitting the roads in the higher elevation (Teller/Fremont/Custer/ Monument) make sure you allow a little extra time as some roads may be a little snow covered. Wet pavement remains everywhere else. We'll see rain/snow showers continue for most of our Monday, clearing out before midnight. Head on over to the "Weather" tab for a full look at the week ahead.
Two people have died in a car accident on Highway 160 east of Fort Garland, near La Veta.
Colorado State Troopers say the driver of a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup, 25-year-old Natasha Garcia-Rael of Pueblo, was westbound on Colorado Highway 160 traveling at a high rate of speed.
She reportedly began to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone. The Ford F250, driven by 59-year-old Henry Vasquez of Elbert, was eastbound Colorado 160 and was hauling a horse trailer with one horse inside. Both vehicles struck head-on in the eastbound lane of traffic. The Chevrolet rotated counter-clockwise and came to rest in the eastbound lane of traffic, facing west. The Ford continued east and came to rest partially in the westbound lane of traffic, facing north.
Natasha Garcia-Rael, was pronounced dead on scene. There was a child passenger in the Chevrolet and was transported via helicopter to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs with critical injuries.
The driver of the Ford, Henry Vasquez, was pronounced dead on scene. Louise Vasquez was a passenger in the Ford and was transported via helicopter to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs with moderate injuries. The horse was not injured in the crash.
Highway 160 is now open after it was shut down for several hours. The crash remains under investigation.
