Neighbors are worried the damage to a concrete storm water ditch could cause flooding to their homes.

Water was at its peak during a rain storm Tuesday afternoon in the Mirage Channel near Lexington Drive and Union Boulevard on the northeast side of Colorado Springs.

Crews began shoring up portions of the damaged walls early Wednesday morning.

Helen Migchelbrink, the city's director of Public Works told 11 News fixing the Mirage Channel is a top priority. The goal now for city engineers is to take a holistic approach to fixing the channel and make permanent repairs.

The temporary repairs currently underway should last through the winter.

"I can't speak to the past efforts, I think there's been a variety, but that just tells me that we've had citizens tell us they've been watching sheets of concrete break up,” Migchelbrink said Wednesday. “It's a scary thing, so let’s get it right."

Migchelbrink estimates the overhaul project will cost $750,000 with work beginning early in the spring of 2013. The temporary repairs currently underway should last through the winter.
