The attorney for a Castle Rock woman accused of smothering her children says she isn't guilty of first-degree murder.
The trial of Kelli Lynn Murphy is under way in the deaths of her 9-year-old son, Liam, and 6-year-old daughter, Madigan, last year.
Prosecutors say she killed them as an act of revenge against her husband after the couple filed for divorce.
KUSA-TV in Denver reports defense attorney Ara Ohanion told jurors Wednesday that Murphy felt abandoned in May 2011 because of the divorce proceedings. Ohanion says Murphy blacked out after drinking a bottle of vodka and taking sleeping pills, hoping her kids would find her dead. But when she woke up, the kids had died, and she was still alive.
Ohanion is asking jurors to consider lesser charges.
