A three-month long investigation has resulted in the arrests of ten people on identity theft-related charges, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says.

The investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Postal Service began during the summer after several reports of mail being stolen from mailboxes. The Sheriff’s Office says counterfeit checks in the victim’s names were passed at local businesses.

In all, 69 victims were identified in this case. The Sheriff’s office calls it an “organized effort to steal mail and create and pass forged checks.”

The Sheriff's Office says some of the suspects would steal the mail while others created the fake checks. Some were recruited only to cash the forged checks.

We spoke to one of their victims who says they stole her identification by breaking into her apartment through a bedroom window.

She tells KKTV 11 News, they took her social security cards, checks, birth certificate and her temporary license.

According to arrest papers, some of those checks were used in the Fountain Valley area.

The victim says her life will never be the same and dealing with identity theft just adds to life's other problems.

El Paso County Sheriff's Office is concerned that there could be more victims out there.
