Authorities are working to determine how a teen ended up in the path of an oncoming train early Saturday morning.

A 17-year-old male was found lying alongside the tracks shortly after 1 a.m. He was conscious when deputies arrived at the tracks, which are located between Mitchell Road and Front Street in Monument.

"The investigation has confirmed the victim was struck by a northbound-traveling train," Sgt. Joe Roybal with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office told 11 News.

Investigators will not release the boy’s name or severity of his injuries because he is under the age of 18. They are also not saying whether or not the train's conductor was aware that the accident occurred, though they did confirm the train did not stop until further down the tracks. All BNSF staff aboard the train will be interviewed by authorities.

The Sheriff's Office is also interviewing the two people who reported the injuries, but we’re told they didn’t see the accident.

Monument police have confirmed that around the time of an accident, a party was being held at a barn near the tracks, known as "Si Sibell's Barn" after a former Monument mayor. Residents in the area believe the party could be connected to the accident, something authorities are now looking into.

The victim's condition is still unknown as of Sunday morning. 11 News will provide any updates once that information is made available.
