UPDATE: Track Fire 80 Percent Contained, Human Caused

By  |

Investigators have determined the culprit behind the Track Fire.

Strong evidence indicates that the operator of an All-Terrain Vehicle trespassed onto private property Sunday, likely igniting the fire with exhaust particles coming from the engine. The land is owned by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. Investigators are now searching for the suspect.

The fire has destroyed numerous structures and displaced hundreds of people for several days. Evacuation orders were lifted Saturday.

Anyone with information on ATV operators driving around in the area the fire ignited on Sunday is asked to call NMSF agent Shawn Beck at 505-827-0503 or the Colfax County Sheriff's Department at 575-445-5561.

Crews made significant progress on containment Saturday, bringing the percent contained to 80 percent Sunday morning, up from 45 percent Saturday. The acreage burned remains just under 27,800. All evacuation orders were lifted Saturday morning.

Eight hundred and thirteen personnel remain on scene at the fire. Twenty-three crews, 31 engines, six water tenders, six dozers and seven helicopters are currently in use over the steep and rugged terrain in an attempt to fully contain the blaze.
