A man accused of robbing three banks in Pueblo during a single week became a suspect after someone recognized him on the news. He’s also a suspect in a fourth robbery in Colorado Springs where his name was left on a slip of paper.
Shawn Godbey, 36, of Florida, was arrested when he left a casino in Cripple Creek.
According to Pueblo County Court documents, Godbey is charged with three counts of aggravated robbery. He allegedly robbed a Sunflower Bank on January 9, an ENT Federal Credit Union on January 12 and a Vectra Bank on January 13.
Colorado Springs Police also say he is responsible for robbing the 1st Bank on West Garden of the Gods Rd. on January 17.
The affidavit describes each robbery as developing very similarly. Godbey would allegedly enter the bank, mill around the lobby mess with paper and pens on the counter where deposit slips are kept.
Next he allegedly approached the counter and put a note with his demands on the counter. In each case the notes were very similar. The note left at the Sunflower Bank, for example, said: “NO ALARMS! I WILL SHOOT! CALMLY N QUICKLY EMPTY ALL CASH FROM DRAWERS INTO THE BAG! NO DYE PACKS, TRACKING DEVICES OR ANYTHING FUNNY. I WILL SHOOT.”
The tellers put money into a black backpack and Godbey allegedly left the banks on foot.
In the robbery in Colorado Springs, Godbey allegedly began writing on one of the deposit slips before approaching the tellers and giving them the note with his demands. During the investigation, police found a slip of paper at the counter with his name on it.
CSPD officers found Godbey’s photo in police files and witnesses positively identified him as the suspect.
Meanwhile, in Pueblo, a woman contacted police after recognizing Godbey in surveillance photos released to the media.
Working together, Pueblo and Colorado Springs Police identified a car Godbey was driving. That car was found at a motel on the north side of Colorado Springs and an interview with a tenant led detectives to believe Godbey was in a casino in Cripple Creek.
Detectives emailed Godbey’s picture to police there, and he was arrested on January 19 when he exited the Brass Ass Casino.
