Fire Closes Evans Elementary, Affects Testing Schedule

UPDATE: Due to smoke damage, Evans Elementary will be closed tomorrow, March 13, to allow for cleanup efforts.

An update on the school's availability for the remainder of the week will be announced later. We will bring you that news as soon as it is available.

Eight classrooms are closed, affecting 150-180 students in fifth, first and fourth grades as well as HeadStart students.

Students will not be allowed into areas until health concerns are cleared by safety officials.

Transitional Colorado Assessment Program testing was underway. There's one fifth grade science and two third grade math sessions remaining, as well as several makeup tests. All students will be given an opportunity to complete the testing.

Officials with Cimarron Hills Fire Department report that the fire at Evans Elementary School started around 10:30 this morning when the automatic fire alarm sounded.

There was a lot of smoke in the building, originating from a lower floor bathroom. The fire is out, but officials say they are still clearing smoke from the building at this time. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office suspects it was started by a student.

Students were evacuated immediately.

D-49 used buses to get the students out of the cold and transport them quickly to Sand Creek High School where they are being sent home with parents.

At this time, fire crews are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Students and teachers at Evans Elementary school have been evacuated this morning due to a fire alarm.

According to school officials, a small fire occurred this morning in the north wing at Evans Elementary School, located at 1675 Winnebago Road in Colorado Springs.

The school's students and faculty were immediately evacuated and accounted for.

Evans Elementary School's students were taken to the field house at Sand Creek High School, located at 7005 North Carefree Circle in Colorado Springs.

The students will be released to their parents and guardians.

Staff members are checking for state-issued identification. Students will not be release without it.

Parents and guardians must use the bus loop located at the north end of the school, which is accessible by North Carefree Circle.
