Strong quake hits Mexico, Guatemala; 3 dead

At least three people are dead after a magnitude-6.9 earthquake jolted a wide area of southern Mexico and Central America.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake hit at 6:23 a.m. (7:23 a.m. EDT; 11:23 GMT) on the Pacific Coast 5 miles (8 kilometers) northeast of Puerto Madero, near the Guatemala border.

Dozens of homes were damaged by the quake on the Pacific Coast. Two of the deaths came in a Guatemalan town near the border with Mexico.

In Mexico local news media reported the quake was felt strongly in the Mexican states of Chiapas and Tabasco.

The quake was centered 57 miles (92.2 kilometers) below the surface.
