Hearing Postponed For Fort Carson Soldier Charged In Infant Death

The court hearing for a Fort Carson soldier accused in the death of his infant stepson was postponed on Thursday.

Attorneys said they have not received an autopsy report in the case and agreed it would be best to wait before moving forward with the preliminary hearing.

The death of the 10-month-old boy in August was ruled a homicide. It was the first child victim homicide in 2012 and the 18th homicide overall for the year.

Zachary Doggett, 20, has been charged in the death.with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. Doggett is an active-duty soldier with Fort Carson.

Police responded to a 911 call on the night of August 24 at 952 Brant Hollow Court regarding a child that was unconscious but breathing. The boy was rushed to the hospital, where doctors noticed numerous bruises on the child's body and facial area.

The coroner reportedly determined that the cause of death was blunt force head trauma.

The parents were in the home at the time of the 911 call. Police say their initial account of what happened was not consistent with their investigation.

Neighbors we spoke with say they were shocked to hear the news, but that they didn't see or hear anything suspicious.

One neighbor said it was heartwrenching to see the child being brought out on a stretcher. He described seeing the step-father in a state of shock and described him as being "visibly distraught" grabbing his head and pacing.

Fort Carson says Doggett is a private first class with the 1st Brigade Team, 4th Infantry Division.
