State Lawmakers to Discuss Fire Legislation

By  |

Colorado lawmakers will meet Tuesday to review possible legislation after a destructive wildfire season.

Some ideas that will be discussed are providing grants for fire-mitigation projects in high risk communities and increasing the amount Colorado pays victims when the state is responsible for the fire.

In March, a state prescribed burn grew out of control southwest of Denver. It killed three people and damaged dozens of homes.

Meanwhile, the Waldo Canyon Fire in Colorado Springs was the most destructive in the state’s history, destroying hundreds of homes and killing two people. The cause remains under investigation.

Another fire in Fort Collins also devastated hundreds of homes and prompted health warnings for weeks.

In response to this year’ s historic fire season, lawmakers appointed a special committee to examine the fires and propose legislation.
