Several streets in a small Colorado town were blocked off Thursday night while deputies tried to arrest a suspect who they say fired a rifle in the direction of patrol vehicles.
The Fremont County Sheriff's Office says the suspect was upset over personal matters, and when deputies responded to his home on the 500 block of 2nd Street in Penrose Thursday afternoon, he fired one round from his bedroom window. Additional deputies were called to secure a perimeter around the home, and authorities tried to convince the suspect to surrender.
For seven hours, deputies say they were involved in a standoff with the suspect. During that time, residents were told to stay in their home. The sheriff's office says the suspect came out of his house twice during the standoff, only to fire one round each time from his rifle. One shot was fired in the air--the other at deputies.
Suspect Robert Fenstermacher, 23, was taken into custody at 11:30 p.m.
Fenstermacher faces charges of first-degree assault, felony menacing, prohibited use of a weapon, reckless endangerment and failure to leave premises at request of peace officer.
