A spruce beetle infestation that has killed about 380,000 acres of trees on the Rio Grande National Forest is expected to cause quick runoffs from snowpack this year.

Rio Grande supervisor Dan Dallas said Tuesday the beetles have chewed through nearly 70 percent of the Rio Grande's spruce habitat and will likely finish off the remainder in the next five to 10 years,

According to the Pueblo Chieftain, the impact of the beetles on snowpack is expected to be around for decades, if not centuries.
