The Department of Defense released the names of three soldiers killed in Afghanistan. One of those soldiers was Spc. Rob L. Nichols from Colorado Springs.
Spc. Nichols, 24, was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Georgia.
The DOD says Spc Nichols, 1st Lt. Jonam Russell and Sgt. Stefan M. Smith were killed July 23 in Afghanistan when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device.
Spc. Nichols was on his first deployment to Afghanistan. His family tells 11 News he also previously served in Iraq. He joined the Army in Sept. 2010.
