Soldier from Colorado Springs Killed in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense released the names of three soldiers killed in Afghanistan. One of those soldiers was Spc. Rob L. Nichols from Colorado Springs.

Spc. Nichols, 24, was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Georgia.

The DOD says Spc Nichols, 1st Lt. Jonam Russell and Sgt. Stefan M. Smith were killed July 23 in Afghanistan when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device.

Spc. Nichols was on his first deployment to Afghanistan. His family tells 11 News he also previously served in Iraq. He joined the Army in Sept. 2010.


A DOD news release says "1st Lt. Jonam Russell, 25, of Cornville, Ariz. [was a]... maneuver fires and effects officer. Lt. Russell joined the Army in Jan. 2011 and arrived at the unit in January 2013. This was his first deployment."
A DOD news release says "Sgt. Stefan M. Smith, 24 of Glennville, Ga. [was an]... infantryman. Sgt. Smith joined the Army in Nov. 2009 and arrived at the unit in June 2012. This was his first deployment."
A DOD news release says "Spc. Rob L. Nichols, 24, of Colorado Springs, Colo. [was an]... infantryman. Spc. Nichols joined the Army in Sept. 2010 and arrived at the unit in Jan. 2011. This was his first deployment in Afghanistan. His family tells 11 News he also had served in Iraq previously."
