Soldier Gets 32 Years In Death Of Infant Stepson

A Fort Carson soldier was sentenced to 32 years in prison for the death of his infant stepson.

Zachary Doggett, 21, will be 53 when he gets out of prison. He will get credit for the 405 days already served. He'll have five years probation after he is released.

Police said they found the child unconscious at Doggett's home in August 2012 when responding to a 911 call. The 10-month-old later died at a Springs hospital. Doggett claimed the child fell, but the coroner found more than 40 bruise marks on the child and ruled the cause of death as blunt force trauma.

Doggett later pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death.

The child's mother took the stand during the sentencing hearing and said she stands by her husband. The two have another son together.

Thirty-two years was the maximum sentence allowed under Doggett's plea deal. He was sentenced Tuesday.
