Officers went to a home Friday afternoon to check on someone who was reportedly suicidal.
But when they got to the house on Holt Drive in northeast Colorado Springs, the officers found themselves face to face with a man aiming his gun at them.
It took just minutes to unfold: the man opened fire, officers shot back and in the end the suspect was on the ground. From the dispatch tapes:
Officer at scene:
"He's pointing the gun at us right now."
"He's shooting at us."
"He shot one round at our car."
Second officer: "If you have a shot, take it."
First officer: "I'm trying."
Second officer: "Is he down? I'm coming in from the east."
Residents in the quiet neighborhood east of the Sky Sox stadium described the scene as a shootout. One woman told 11 News she heard at least "four pops."
In the end, only the suspect was injured. He was taken to a local hospital, where his condition is unknown.
The incident is being investigated by the CSPD Major Crimes Unit. The district attorney's office is also taking part in the investigation.
