11 News Exclusive: Sheriff Talks about Effects of Scandal on His Family

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa is opening up about how his family is dealing with the allegations swirling around him and his office.

His wife, Vicki has stood by his side through all of it. She's even been at public rallies supporting him.

In an exclusive interview with KKTV 11 News, Maketa said one of the hardest things about some of the negative media reports is the impact on his family, especially his father.

"I can see it emotionally and physically effecting him as well as every other member of my family," Maketa said.

The Sheriff, who has been in office for 12 years, said this kind of experience has taught him who his true friends are.

There are EEOC complaints filed by some employees who work under him. Among other things, they allege the Sheriff improperly promoted some female employees based on sexual relationships.

"They feel so helpless because they know it's not true: your wife, or your spouse, or your children. They may have been at an event that's been mischaracterized, and they're very livid and very upset about it and they want to do something and it's that helplessness that just wears them down... And the feeling that they can't do anything, or they're afraid if they do something it's going to worsen the situation," Maketa said.

Maketa also said a county oversight committee went over the books and found nothing in the way of financial mismanagement on his part as some other media outlets have reported.

This interview segment is part two of a three-part series. Part three will air on KKTV 11 News at 10p.m. August 25.
