An elderly woman attacked in a grocery store parking lot in broad daylight.
It happened Tuesday at the Safeway near Academy and Union in Colorado Springs.
Police said a man tried to steal an 85-year-old woman's purse in the Safeway parking lot. They said witnesses told them someone stepped in to help and chased the suspect away.
11 News talked to shoppers in the area and most of them were surprised to hear the robbery attempt was in the area. They were even more shocked that the crime happened in the middle of the day.
Shoppers say they know the dangers of being out after dark. However, hearing this attack was mid-afternoon caught them off guard.
"You're probably not as nervous as when it's dark and you usually expect bad things are going to happen in the dark," shopper Teddi Tucker said.
"Not when there's a bunch of people around...definitely not, I would never think that," Hannah Wadsworth added.
"I have five kids and I’m alone with them all the time...we come [to Safeway] morning, noon, and night, so definitely scary," Amanda Ketteman said.
Rebecca Well told 11 News it was strange to think the incident happened somewhere that she frequents.
"I’ve only lived here 14 months but I come to this store a lot so it is unusual," Well said.
The shoppers we talked to said they do their best to stay aware of their surroundings.
"I just think people are so brazen anymore and they don't care and hurting an [85-year-old] I mean come on," Tucker said.
