Although the search is over, the investigation into what happened while a 9-year-old girl was missing continues.
Investigators are trying to figure out how Sidney Peet left her home in Cotopaxi, a small town outside Canon City, and ended up in Poncha Springs. The two tons are separated by about 50 miles.
The girl’s foster parents say she went outside to play around 8:00 a.m. and disappeared. Her foster parents called authorities after spending several hours searching for her.
The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office believed the girl was heading to Grand Junction, where her biological mother lives. Somewhere along the way, an elderly woman picked the child up. More than 14 hours later, the woman saw the girl’s picture on the news and called deputies.
Why the woman picked her up, and how long the two spent at the woman’s home remain unanswered questions. Investigators say they’ve visited the home and called, but haven’t yet been able to make contact with the woman.
The girl’s foster parents are in the process of adopting her.
