A local school district and police are investigating a threat at a southern Colorado High School.
District 8 said the threat at Fountain-Fort Carson high school originated with a Facebook post Monday, then escalated as students and parents began "expanding" on the comment. The threat was later determined to be unfounded.
The district addressed the situation in a notice sent to parents and staff Tuesday:
This is a good time to remind parents we have processes in place to protect our students. Any threat, alleged threat, or rumor should be shared as soon as possible with administration or teachers. This information can be shared directly or anonymously through Safe2Tell at (719) 520-7435 (This contact is on the back of student ID’s.) In yesterday’s and today’s situations both processes worked. This first contact by students or parents receiving information should be through one of these avenues. Unfortunately, social media perpetuated the rumors and created a lot of unnecessary fear for parents and students. Please help us at FFCHS by contacting through the appropriate channels and not posting or passing on rumors.
Fear and rumors led to more fear and rumors when in reality no one was ever in danger.
