We have all heard of road rage stories where the victim doesn't survive--luckily in this story the victim does.
Kayla Hawkins surveys the damage to her vehicle after a scary road rage incident.
A young woman and her friends were headed north on Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs Wednesday evening, just before 7, when a couple in a vehicle threw a cup at 20-year-old Kayla Hawkins' SUV. She says the car sped up and the pair inside screamed that she had cut them off. This was just past Palmer Park and Academy.
"It was crazy," said Hawkins.
She tells 11 News when they got to the next intersection of La Salle and Academy, she heard the male passenger in the other vehicle ask his driver for a gun while he got out of the car.
"I honestly thought I was going to die."
That's when the suspect allegedly pointed the gun at the car--but then ultimately decided against shooting. He took off and continued north on Academy.
"I didn't know people get crazy over driving," said Hawkins.
Hawkins and her three passengers decided to follow them to get the license plate to report it to police. Once they got to Academy and Maizeland the man got out once again, this time with a hammer, and took aim at her 2002 Hyundai Sante Fe.
"It was just the scariest moment of my life. I don't understand who would do that to somebody," said Hawkins.
Two of her windows are completely gone and the windshield has been shattered.
"I was just shaking so bad, I've been shaking, this morning I was shaking."
Police are now investigating and trying to find the suspect. Springs police tells us the man could face felony menacing charges once they find him.
