The Waldo Canyon fire destroyed almost everything from the Boyd family’s home in the Mountain Shadows neighborhood. Wednesday, on their fourth wedding anniversary, the couple became the first to start the process of building a new home on their lot.

Jody Boyd and Patricia Nelson Boyd have elected to build a home with a new floor plan on their property along Yankton Place. Patricia says they decided the location was important to them, despite the heirlooms and possessions that were lost in the fire.

“We did look around at other properties,” she said. “We didn’t find anything that, for us, meant what this property means.”

The process will begin with a cleanup of the concrete and other debris left behind when the fire consumed the former home.

“We’re just looking forward to moving back home, possibly in December if all goes well,” Jody said.

Demolition and cleanup began Wednesday. The builder, Classic Homes, hopes to start work on the new foundation next week. That may precede any city decision on implementing new fire codes in the Mountain Shadows area. Project manager Jim Boulton speculated those rules may include fire resistant roofing or siding materials.

“We’ll make changes as they determine what the new policies are,” Boulton said.

“The only direction to go is forward and to do that in a timely manner is going to get us home,” Patricia said.
