Pueblo County Sheriff Says He Will Enforce Gun Laws But May Not Devote Resources

A southern Colorado sheriff says he will enforce Colorado's new gun laws, even if he doesn't agree with them.

Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk Taylor says he'll enforce the laws--but he doesn't expect them to be effective. He says that he doesn't think that the new laws will keep guns away from criminals or prevent mass shootings.

Taylor says he has been elected to uphold the law, and will not pick and choose which laws to enforce.

In a formal letter sent to media on Wednesday, Taylor stated:

".. I clearly possess full legal authority to decide how to use the resources of this Office and what to prioritize as far as enforcement and work activity of the men and women of the Sheriff's Office."

"Because of the widely discussed difficulties in enforcing these laws," Taylor says he finds it a "poor use of public resources."

He goes on to say that it is his stance that transfers and possessions of high-capacity magazines are "proper and legal unless there is clear and convincing evidence otherwise or someone is openly, blatantly defying state law."

In an interview at the Sheriff's Office Thursday, Taylor also said that until lawmakers give more specifics on the inner workings of the new laws, he won't be able to decide how best to allocate the departments resources to enforce the new laws.
