Springs police tracked down a stolen car and returned it to it's owner this afternoon.
The owner left it running in his driveway Tuesday morning. It happened on Audubon drive near Airport and Academy.
The homeowner, Timothy Ortega, told police he left the car running to warm up before driving his kids to school. Police said he heard the engine rev-up a couple of times and when he went outside, he saw the suspect backing the car out of the driveway.
Ortega, tried to pull the suspect out of the car, but says the suspect flashed a gun. He also noticed his kids standing in the front yard so he backed off.
"When I saw him pull out his gun and my kids around, my first priority was my kids' safety and it's just a car," Ortega said.
Ortega's wife was also standing at the end of the driveway when the suspect hit her with the car. It knocked her down, she a little sore but said she's okay.
The car was found at the Wintney Young Manor Apartments a few hours later. The Ortega family said it’s because of the early exposure of the crime that it was recovered so quickly.
“It was really great because basically the whole city of Colorado Springs helped out and just little pieces here and there, got my car back,” Ortega said.
Police do not have a detailed description of the suspect, but if you have any information you’re urged to call Crimestoppers 634-STOP. You can remain anonymous.
