Flames rapidly spread from the floors to the ceilings of a home in Fountain Saturday morning, rendering the house a total loss.

Authorities now believe the fire was set intentionally, and are asking the public for help in finding the responsible party.

Someone driving down the 200 block of Illinois Avenue noticed smoke coming from the home and called the Fountain Fire Department. By the time firefighters responded, around 5:15 a.m., smoke was seeping out of the roof. Flames soon began spilling over a bedroom window.

It's believed the fire started underneath the floors, then went up the walls and into the ceiling. The occupants, who are renting the home, were not there at the time of the fire.

Once the nature of the fire was determined to be suspicious, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation was contacted. A canine detected multiple areas of "ignitable liquids" at or near where the fire was started.

Officials say there were other clues pointing at arson as the cause.

The Fire Department asks that anyone who saw anything suspicious between the hours of 9 p.m. April 12 and 5 a.m. April 13 in the area of Race Street and Illinois Avenue to call 719-382-7800 and ask to speak with the fire investigation division.
