A little girl was walking with her dog in suburban Denver when authorities say a man grabbed her by the neck and dragged her into a nearby alley.
Thanks to the girl's quick thinking--and little assistance from her dog, who bit the suspect--the 10-year-old was able to escape. Police say she screamed loudly, drawing attention to what was happening, and fought the suspect off. He eventually let go.
As people rushed to help, police say the suspect ran into a nearby home. The child provided police with a detailed description of the suspect, and with that information police were able to locate him. After an hour standoff, the suspect surrendered.
Sister station KCNC reports that the suspect was hospitalized for treatment of self-inflicted injuries. He's been identified as 35-year-old Dennis James Wilmore, a registered sex offender.
The little girl had minor injuries.
The incident happened at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Wheat Ridge.
