Self-Defense Claimed In Overnight Stabbing

Two injured men both claim self-defense in an encounter that led to a stabbing.

Police were first called to the area of Cimarron and El Paso around 12:20 a.m. on reports of a man with stab wounds. The victim told police a man approached him for money. As he tried to flee, the victim said that he stumbled and fell. The suspect then stabbed him.

To fight back, the victim told officers he found a board and swung it at the suspect. The suspect was able to get away, and the victim could not give police a description of what he looked like.

About 20 minutes later, officers were sent to the 1000 block of S. Chelton to talk to an assault victim. The man told police he was confronted by two people, one armed with a knife, one carrying a board. The victim said he was attacked by the man wielding the board, resulting in him stabbing that man in self-defense. The victim said he then disarmed the man carrying the knife.

Police say both men were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol and/or drugs are suspected to be involved in the incident. No arrests have been made.
