A man says he shot three pit bulls after they got into his garage and attacked his dog.

Springs police say the pit bulls were already dead by the time they got to the home on the 2100 block of Eddington Way early Saturday morning.

The homeowner reportedly told the responding officers that he was woken up just after 1:20 a.m. by some sort of commotion in his garage. When he went to investigate, he allegedly saw his dog being attacked by three other dogs that weren't his, and according to police grabbed his handgun and shot the intruders.

Police say based on their investigation, the pit bulls got into the homeowner's backyard and then used a doggie door to get into the garage.

Eight-year-old Springer, a German Shepherd, was injured but is expected to be fine after receiving medical treatment, his owner tells 11 News.

Police say the pit bulls did not have any tags or microchips, so at this time it's unknown whether or not they had an owner.

The police department says any charges filed in this case will be based on a recommendation from the Humane Society, who are taking over the investigation.
