A new ban on panhandling will go into effect within the next two weeks in downtown Colorado Springs. Among the activities now banned: Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign.
11 News talked to the Salvation Army to find out how much the new ban will impact their ability to fundraise during the holiday season. A spokesman told us that it will have an effect, but probably not as large as many people think.
He said only one bell ringing location will be affected. That’s on the corner of Tejon and Pikes Peak.
He said not being able to collect downtown is a loss, but is optimistic that the panhandling ban will not significantly hurt their fundraising.
The El Paso County Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign raised $68,000 last year and accounts for around 15 percent of the organization’s income.
