Oreo's family, who lives in Rock Springs, Wyo., had been looking for him since Thanksgiving. They were thrilled and stunned to receive a phone call over the weekend that the pup was alive and well--in Colorado Springs.

Laurie Cardin was getting a coffee at the Safeway on Murray and Fountain Saturday morning when one of the workers told her about a dog that had made a mad dash into the store.

When Cardin went back to the break room and saw Oreo, she knew she had to help.

She first called the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region to the store. They were able to check the dog's tags and get information on where he is from and who he belongs to.

Oreo was then taken to the Animal Emergency Care Center where despite his journey, he was given a clean bill of health. Afterwards, he was given a much-needed bath at Soggy Doggy Grooming. Cardin says both the vet and the owner of Soggy Doggy waived Oreo's fees.

While Oreo got some well-deserved pampering, Cardin got in touch with his owners, who couldn't believe their dog had been found.

"The 13-year-old who he belongs to cried," Cardin told 11 News.

But the family couldn't afford to pay for his way back home and neither could Cardin. Using social media, Cardin appealed to the public for help.

Monday, the Denver Dachshunds Rescue and Transport contacted 11 News and said they had agreed to take Oreo home to Wyoming. Cardin told 11 News that Oreo's journey home began at 11 a.m. Monday at the very grocery store where he first "barked for help!"

From there, a relay of good Samaritans each took a leg of the 409-mile trip. Oreo was transported from the Springs to Denver, from Denver to the Wyoming border, from the border to Rock Springs.

Monday night, after three weeks and a more than 800-mile round trip, Oreo and his family were reunited.

Those who took part in Oreo's odyssey had this to say to sum up their efforts Monday after seeing the 13-year-old reunited with her beloved dog:

"That smile makes every single mile worth it."
