Boulder County's top prosecutor says he doesn't expect to decide until at least Friday whether charges should be filed over an elk killed by a police officer.

The Daily Camera reports District Attorney Stan Garnett met with Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials on Tuesday and said the investigation is still ongoing.

Boulder police have said an on-duty officer who said the elk looked like it needed to be put down shot the animal Jan. 1, and an off-duty officer took it to be processed for meat. Officers Sam Carter and Brent Curnow, who has a taxidermy website and had called in sick the night the elk died, are on paid leave pending results of an internal investigation.

Hunting isn't allowed in city limits.
