New Law Increases Hit-And-Run Penalties

A bill signed into law Wednesday increases the criminal penalty for a hit-and-run that causes serious injury.

House Bill 1084 was sponsored by state Rep. Kathleen Conti and sponsored by state Rep. Rhonda Fields. It also received support from organizations including the County Sheriffs of Colorado and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

The new law makes a hit-and-run resulting in serious bodily injury a Class 4 felony, which carries the same weight as driving under the influence of alcohol. Previously, the drivers might received a lesser penalty than if they had stayed and helped.
