New Study About Baby Gate Safety

Baby gates are designed to protect kids from stairs and other dangers around the home, but if they're used incorrectly they can be very dangerous.

According to a new study in the journal Academic Pediatrics, almost 2,000 kids have to go to the emergency room every year after they get hurt either climbing on the gates or falling through them.

The study says the number of injuries has more than tripled over the last 20 years.

According to the report, more than 60 percent of kids that were hurt were younger than 2 years old. They were usually hurt falling down the stairs after a gate collapsed or if it was left open.

The younger kids were also more likely to have serious head injuries related to baby gates.

Researchers found kids 2-6 years old were often cut or bruised by climbing on the gates.

The experts suggest using hardware-mounted baby gates at the top of stairs.

They say to install the gates when kids are between 6 months and 2 years old, and then remove the gates when the child turns 2.

If you have pressure-mounted baby gates, the researchers say to use those as room dividers or at the bottom of the stairs.
