People across the nation will be observing a moment of silence Friday morning in remembrance of those killed at a Connecticut elementary school exactly one week ago.

The request for a moment of silence came from Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

"Too often, we focus on what divides us as people, instead of what binds us together as human beings," Malloy wrote in a letter to other governors. "The sense of community that has emerged in the wake of this tragedy should not be lost as we begin to emerge from this national tragedy, and I ask you to join with me and the citizens of Connecticut to remember the loved ones lost last Friday."

Malloy asked that the moment of silence be held at 9:30 a.m. in the respective time zones. 9:30 is when the massacre took place. As of this writing, the eastern and central time zones have already observed the moment of silence; Colorado will be observing it at 9:30 a.m. MST.

Malloy has also declared Friday a "Day of Mourning" in Connecticut.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper has asked places of worship and government buildings to ring bells 26 times in honor of the children and faculty killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Malloy has made the same request of Connecticut facilities.
