Catholics across Colorado Springs came together Thursday to celebrate the election of Pope Francis.

Local bishop Michael Sheridan of the Diocese of Colorado Springs conducted a noon mass at St. Mary's Cathedral.

The new pope, who was elected Wednesday, is from Argentina and is now known as Pope Francis.

He's the first ever from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium.

Bishop Sheridan says he thinks Pope Francis was a great choice.

"Obviously he is a humble and simple man who lives in a little apartment in Buenos Aires, I think he's great,"

Pope Francis was elected after Pope Benedict resigned. He was the first Pope to resign in 600 years.
